Facebook and Instagram DOWN: Social media users despair as two major networks knocked offline

Facebook and Instagram, two of the largest social networks in the world, have both been knocked offline, in what appears to be a major outage.

Both services started experiencing issues at around 16:00 BST, according to independent website DownDetector, which tracks major network outages.

Users in the South of England and East Coast of America appear to be the worst affected, although problems were also reported elsewhere in Europe and the United States.

Some users claim it is just the desktop versions of the websites that are offline, while others say they are also unable to access the social networks on their mobile devices.

Many of the thousands of users affected took to rival social network Twitter to complain about the lack of service.

It is not yet clear what has caused the outages, but it is perhaps no coincidence, given that both social networks are owned by the same company.

"We're aware that some people are currently having trouble accessing Facebook and Instagram," a Facebook spokesperson told Mirror Online.

"We're working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible.”

This is the third major outage this week, after EE's mobile network suffered major problems yesterday, and Snapchat was taken offline on Tuesday.

There is currently nothing to suggest the incidents are related.
