Arson yob set homeless man's tent set alight while he was inside, leaving him just seconds to scramble to safety

A homeless man is lucky to be alive after his tent was set alight in a horrifying city centre attack .

The victim narrowly managed to escape after Ian Gordon started several fires, sending the tent up in flames.

Terrifying footage shows Gordon, 51, start the blaze in the middle of Birmingham. Police say they still don't know why he did it.

Gordon was jailed for six-and-a-half years after pleading guilty to arson with intent to endanger life.

He was caught after an officer recognised him from the CCTV images, which were shown to cops during a briefing.

He was arrested the night after the fire, which happened on June 21 this year.

The tent had been pitched on grass close to Carrs Lane in the city centre.

Gordon, of Kitt’s Green, initially denied any involvement when he was arrested.

On Monday he was jailed for six years and six months at Birmingham Crown Court, and had his licence period extended by four years.

The victim was looked at by paramedics and treated for the effects of smoke inhalation.

DC Laurence Green, of Birmingham West local investigation team, said: “We still don’t know what the motivation for this was.

“Following the offence, a number of officers from the local neighbourhood team and CID walked around the city centre, speaking with members of the homeless community, not only to gather intelligence of the offence, but to reassure them.

“The offender was quickly identified from the excellent CCTV footage and was arrested from his home address.”
